Parties with a purpose

Save the dates are going out for the new year, and the MS Society is keeping it virtual.
Instead of the annual luncheon in Boca West honoring local people living with multiple sclerosis, entertainment moguls Gloria and Emilio Estefan will help fundraise at the 38th annual National MS Society’s South Florida Virtual Benefit from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday Jan. 24. Gloria’s late father had MS.

Past Hope Award honorees at the Boca event were Rocco’s Tacos owner Rocco Mangel; Scott & Molly boutiques owner Lisa Kaufman, married to construction CEO Michael Kaufman and Maral Bardakjian.
Covering recent outdoor events, Friends of Gumbo Limbo Nature Center gathered under a tent at Crazy Uncle Mike’s for their annual food and beverage tasting Gumbofest. More than 100 supporters RSVPed for the “friendraiser,” rather than a fundraiser, explained Friends president Jim Miller. “It’s a way to get back together,” added executive director John Holloway.
The event kicked off the new corporate stewardship program, and the music and restaurant venue’s owner Mike Goodwin joined. “It means so much to have him in our corner,” Miller said. The Friends continue to fundraise for the tower with a waterfront view on the property. https://www.gumbolimbo.org/bring-back-the-tower
The city’s nature center remains closed to visitors, but the boardwalk under the coastal hammock is open.
It’s a wrap:
Boca West Children’s Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County held the 11th annual holiday shopping trip. Twenty local kids shopped at Old Navy in Boca Raton. An additional 175 kids from the Boca Raton and Delray Beach clubs received a $50 gift card for the store.
Later that morning, all 195 kids enjoyed a holiday brunch at the Boys & Girls Clubs, in lieu of the foundation’s annual blowout brunch in Boca West’s ballroom. Each child returned home with a toy from Santa and a harvest basket filled with all the fixings for a holiday meal.
SafeSun Foundation’s ninth annual virtual Martinis for Melanoma raised more than $50,000 for a permanent sunshade at AVDA (Aid to Victim’s of Domestic Abuse), sun safety education, free sunscreen dispensers, care for patients in need and melanoma research.
When COVID threatened the event, co-founder Fran Nachlas enlisted the help of OGK Creative. SafeSun more than doubled its projected goal with this year’s virtual event, she said. “We could not be more excited, and to see this type of support and generosity,” added Nachlas, who with her husband Dr. Nathan Nachlas, co-founded the foundation with the Luciano and Friedman families. https://safesunfoundation.com/
