Job-hunting? City needs part-timers

Boca’s in a bind for part-timers and has sidelined some tasks usually handled by those staffers, city manager Leif Ahnell said candidly at a public council meeting.

“Since the pandemic, the city has experienced a decline in applications for part-time positions; however, we believe that the volume will increase as pandemic conditions improve,” the city spokesperson confirmed via email.

The city considers part-time work not to exceed 30 hours a week. Days and times required vary: “Jobs often require working a flexible schedule to include day and evening hours on weekdays, weekends and holidays,” the spokesperson said.

For instance, “currently the city is seeking to hire part-time athletic leader, park gate attendant, tennis aide II positions. These positions work varying schedules and days, based on the operational needs of the services provided.”

Some are desk jobs during normal business hours. For instance, Financial Services is among city departments looking for applicants.

Part-time position rates start at $11.50/hour.

Are there employment benefits? “Part-time employees are eligible to receive paid leave and participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan after working at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year. Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive hours 12 hours of paid leave on Oct. 1…to be used no later than Sept. 30 of that fiscal year,” the spokesperson said.

Employees are also eligible to receive free library cards, discounted beach passes, access to the city gym, and membership to the credit union.

There may be openings appropriate for students just looking for summer employment and retirees who don’t want physically strenuous work.

“Seasonal positions include summer pool lifeguard, and youth counselors when available. Candidates seeking employment with the city can review the job specifications prior to applying to consider if the role would be suitable for their qualifications and capabilities,” the spokesperson added.

“Applicants are encouraged to review the city’s job postings on a regular basis as new positions can be posted weekly. They can also subscribe in the application system to receive an email notification: once a position in a category of their choice becomes available.”

All open positions and job descriptions are on the city’s website at the  “Find a Job” link in the center of the homepage.
