They called home. Wouldn’t you, if you brought a Congressional App Challenge win back to Boca.
St. Andrew’s School’s Michael Yang, 15, and Yiang Cheng, 17, won for Superpass. The app uses facial recognition and a password to give visitors access.
Congressman Ted Deutch noted an app expert picked the District 22 winner he announced at the school early Friday. The students each won a $250 Amazon web credit to advance their work.
Now the Chinese boarding students get to go to House of Code, a science fair in Washington D.C. Their proud design technology instructor Joseph Uriarte said he’ll go along, since their families live so far. “This is the first year we took part,” in the challenge, he said. The pair are in his other tech classes and robotics club.
She hopes the win inspires them to pursue high-tech careers, department chair Michelle Murray told them.
“I’m excited about the kind of work these guys are doing,” added Dr. Gregg Good, head of upper school. “It’s real and relevant.”
“When you head off to college, think about that work and your impact on the public,” Deutch added.
