Boca-based ADT buys largest independent partner

Boca-based ADT Inc. announced it has acquired Defenders for $381 million.

The firm is described as ADT’s “largest independent dealer and only authorized premier provider” for 22 years.

“We have built our business by partnering with ADT to sell and install state-of-the-art security systems…,” for 2.2 million families, Defender chairman and founder David Lindsey said in the announcement.

Defender is based in Indianapolis, Ind. with approximately 2,900 team members across more than 130 field locations.

“ADT is committed to retaining its corporate headquarters in beautiful Boca and this latest acquisition doesn’t affect that,” ADT spokesman Bob Tucker told Boca Voice.

ADT’s last large acquisition was Red Hawk Fire & Security on Oct. 15, 2018 for $317 million. “They are a leader in design and installation as a commercial security company,” Tucker said.

The firm sold ADT Canada in November 2019.

The company was a business unit of Tyco. It spun off as a publicly traded firm in 2011 and moved into the present building at 1501 Yamato Road.

The Defender acquisition will create a “single-party customer experience” and improve brand marketing, said ADT president and CEO Jim DeVries.

ADT expects lower subscriber acquisition costs and new account gains over time, he added in the announcement. “As one company, we can create a unique and simplified platform.”
